Brent Starzyk is an avid runner, and he started to develop an
interest in this form of exercise when he was in high school. Brent Starzyk was a very
good basketball player, and he made the varsity squad when he was a junior, but
he did not play much at that time. Over the summer after his junior year, he
decided to put everything he had into the sport in preparation for his final
year of high school eligibility. Like most people who enjoy basketball, when he
practiced his shooting and dribbling, he didn't look at it as work; it was pure
fun.
However, he knew that he had to kick his aerobic fitness up a notch he was
going to have enough stamina to outlast the competition during his senior year.
Throughout that entire summer, Brent Starzyk would get up early
every morning, lace up his running shoes, and hit the road. At first, he
started running two miles a day, and after a couple of weeks, he increased his
daily workout to three miles. Eventually, he was running five miles every day,
and once a week he would do a long-distance run. His best effort was a 13 mile
cruise that left him exhausted, but exhilarated.
When school started in September, he joined the cross country
squad, so he continued to build on his aerobic fitness before basketball season
got underway. Though he is broad shouldered and tall, he ran some good times
for the cross country team. It all paid off when Brent Starzyk had a fantastic
season with the varsity basketball squad, and he still runs on a regular basis.
